Hunger Protest: Don’t bother to continue

The Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun has warned protesters to discontinue the ongoing national protest against hunger and bad governance or have the police and other armed forces to contend with.

Briefing the press in Abuja this evening, Mr. Egbetokun said the NPF shall not hesitate to call in other members of the Nigerian armed forces to help quell the uprising should they be overwhelmed.

Giving his view about the way the protest panned out on the first day, he insisted that what happened today was, “Mass uprising and looting, not protest”. He regretted that even “those who claimed to be the protest leaders were nowhere to be found when things got out of hand”.

Advising the protesters to be law abiding he said, “groups who claim to exercise right to protest must also know they are duty bound to obey laws of the land.

Know your rights but do not neglect your responsibilities or duties,” he cautioned the protesting youth.

He warned that the police was on the red alert and determined to ensure that law and order was maintained in the country.

Concluding, the Police chief said, “I advise that they should not bother to continue with this.”

  • Breaking News: Guber legal battles: Delta, Nasarawa, Sokoto, 7 other know fate today

Breaking News: Guber legal battles: Delta, Nasarawa, Sokoto, 7 other know fate today

The Supreme Court will today determine the fate of nine governors whose victory in the governorship election held on March 18, 2023, are being challenged.

The states that the apex court has heard cases that were lodged by aggrieved candidates and reserved its judgement, are Delta, Rivers, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Gombe, Kaduna and Ogun.

A top official at the Supreme Court who pleaded not to be mentioned, told Vanguard that judgement in some of the cases were brought forward to Friday after the court vacated the whole of next week to allow its overworked justices to rest.

While Justice Inyang Okoro will head the panel that will decide some of the appeals, the other panel will be led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

Even though all the cases were heard by a five-member panel, however, last Friday when the apex court delivered marathon judgements on governorship election appeals from eight states of the federation, eight Justices sat for the proceedings.

A panel of the court led by Justice Kekere-Ekun had on Thursday, announced that it would on Friday, deliver judgement on the appeal that is seeking to nullify the election of Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Mohammed Barde, are praying the apex court to set aside the concurrent verdict of the Court of Appeal and the Gombe State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which dismissed the case they filed to challenge the declaration of governor Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the gubernatorial contest.

The panel okayed the matter for judgement, after all the parties adopted their briefs of argument.
The court, however, dismissed another appeal that was filed against governor Yahaya’s election by the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nafiu Bala.

The Appellant withdrew the matter after the apex court panel drew his attention to the fact that his case was premised on pre-election issues.

Similarly, the court reserved its judgement on Kaduna state governorship election dispute after the parties also adopted their arguments.

The PDP and its candidate, Mohammed Ashiru, are praying the court to sack Governor Uba Sani, who won his election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared that governor Sani garnered a total of 730, 001 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Ashiru, who polled 719, 196 votes.

However, dissatisfied with the result of the election, the PDP and its candidate approached the tribunal to challenge it.

The petitioners alleged that governor Uba was not duly elected by majority of valid votes cast in the election, adding that the election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and non compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

The court said Emefiele must, however, remain in the country.

On his bail terms, he was restricted to the FCT.

Emefiele, through his lawyer, Mathew Bukka, SAN, had requested a variation of the terms.

The Counsel of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not object.

He told the court to ensure that Emefiele wrote an undertaking that he would remain in the country if his plea was granted.

  • BREAKING: Court Grants Ex-Minister Agunloye N50m Bail

BREAKING: Court Grants Ex-Minister Agunloye N50m Bail

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court Apo, on Thursday, granted bail to ex-Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, in the sum of N50 million.

Agunloye was arraigned on seven counts bordering on fraudulent award of a contract and official corruption, on Wednesday.

The judge had ordered his remand in Kuje Correctional Centre pending hearing and ruling on the bail application.

Moving the application, the Counsel for the former minister, Adeola Adedipe, prayed the court to grant bail to his client by way of self-recognisance or in liberal terms.

He said Argunloye is not a flight risk and that the notion canvassed by the prosecution was “born out of misconception and communication barrier”.

Adedipe also appealed to the court not to order the use of a public servant as surety for his client.

The senior lawyer also argued that the apprehensive misconception about bail and the mischief argued by the prosecution has been cured by Section 352( 4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

Under this provision, Adeola said, “Once a defendant is admitted to bail, even if he absconds, the trial will continue and he will be convicted where necessary.”

However, the prosecution counsel opposed the bail application.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Onwuegbuzie said the pendulum of the court swings in favour of granting bail to the defendant.

He granted N50 million bail to the defendant and ordered him to produce two sureties in like sum.

The sureties must be “reputable” and “people of means” resident within the FCT.

They must have properties worth N300 million with a Certificate of Occupancy that must be verifiable.

They must submit copies of their identity card and photocopies of their international passports to the court.

The defendant is to submit his passport to the court and must be present for hearing at all times.

The matter has been adjourned to February 12.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating Agunloye over the $6 billion Mambilla Hydropower Contract.

  • Ondo Gov, Akeredolu is Dead

Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, the Governor of Ondo State, has passed away after a prolonged struggle with leukemia.

According to a source within his family, Akeredolu breathed his last in Lagos, under the care of State House doctors, unable to travel abroad due to his health condition.

The 67-year-old governor, who had been undergoing medical attention since his return from Germany in September, recently handed over power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa, following directives from President Bola Tinubu. Aiyedatiwa had been acting as Governor during Akeredolu’s periods of medical leave.

Akeredolu’s health struggles were evident earlier in the year when his wife, Betty, announced the suspension of her 70th birthday celebrations due to unforeseen circumstances related to her husband’s health.

Reports surfaced indicating the Governor’s battle with leukemia, a cancer of the blood affecting the production of essential blood cells, leading to severe health complications.

Leukemia, which disrupts the body’s ability to fight infections, manifests in various forms, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Its symptoms, as outlined by medical sources, encompass weakness, bruising, fever, infections, bone pain, and several other discomforts.

The Governor’s courageous fight against this formidable disease and the subsequent impact on his ability to govern drew public attention and concern. Akeredolu’s passing leaves a void in the state leadership, prompting grief and tributes from citizens across Ondo and beyond.
