Champions League: Liverpool beat Lille to reach last 16

Liverpool booked their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Lille on Tuesday at Anfield.

The victory was achieved through goals from talisman Mohamed Salah and substitute Harvey Elliott.

Arne Slot’s men maintained their 100 per cent record and top the 36-team table with 21 points, three points clear of second-placed Barcelona with one game of the league phase remaining. Lille are 11th with 13 points.

Salah netted his 50th European goal for Liverpool in the 34th minute when he sprinted onto a long pass from Curtis Jones after Kostas Tsimikas won the ball inside the Reds’ half, and then curled a shot around goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

“We got the ball and Curtis played the ball very well finally and I managed to score,” Salah said.

In spite of being reduced to 10 men when Aissa Mandi was shown his second yellow card in the 59th minute for his tackle on Luis Diaz.

Jonathan David levelled for the visitors three minutes later when he hammered home the loose ball after Hakon Arnar Haraldsson’s shot was blocked.

The strike was David’s fifth in the Champions League this season and only the second Liverpool had conceded, with the first coming in their opening game at AC Milan.

“Not switched off but they went to counter-attack and managed to score,” Salah said. “The clean sheet is very important to us and our backline.”

Liverpool quickly regained the lead when a corner was headed out to the edge of the box and Elliott fired a crisp shot that took a wild deflection into the net in the 67th minute.

Darwin Nunez celebrated what he thought was Liverpool’s third goal just before added time, but it was chalked off for offside.

Lille showed why they are unbeaten in 21 successive games in all competitions inside the opening minute on Tuesday when Gabriel Gudmundsson’s shot from outside of the box sailed just wide of the net.

Salah squandered several terrific chances. He could not quite connect with Diaz’s square ball in the first half, and then had only the keeper to beat in the 44th minute but shot wide of the post.

Liverpool travel to PSV Eindhoven for their final match of the league phase on Jan. 29, while Lille host Feyenoord.

Cricket: Nigeria makes history, claims first World Cup win

Nigeria’s sporting prowess appears borderless as its U19 women secures first win in her first game at the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

Nigeria defeated 2023 semi finalists, New Zealand, by 2 runs on Monday morning at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Sarawak.

Having seen their first game against Samoa abandoned with both teams sharing a point apiece, Nigeria finally got on the park in Sarawak in a reduced 13-over match.

Nigeria, losing the toss and sent in to bat first, Captain Piety Lucky led the charge scoring Nigeria’s first World Cup six.

New Zealand, however, hit back, applying the squeeze and claiming two wickets to see Nigeria slip to 28 for three after the powerplay.

Nigeria’s Lilian Ude had the most runs with 19 before a four off the final ball from Omosigho Eguakun saw Nigeria set New Zealand 66 to win.

The Junior Yellow Greens got off to a flying start in the defence, taking their first World Cup wicket off their first ball as Kate Irwin was run out without facing.

Her opening partner, Emma McLeod, was dismissed for three in the third over as the other pair of New Zealand’s Eve Wolland and Anika Todd scored patiently but their dismissals gave Nigeria Renewed Hope.

Ude bowled a perfect final over, conceding only six runs with a run out on the final ball as Nigeria claimed a historic win.

Captain Lucky is Player of the match for  her batting contributions 18(22) and with the ball 1/8 (3).

Nigeria are now second in group C with three points, behind South Africa with four points. Samoa are third place with a point while New Zealand are bottom place without a point.

  • Diallo’s hat-trick rescues Man-U from Southampton defeat

    Diallo’s hat-trick rescues Man-U from Southampton defeat

Amad Diallo struck a 12-minute hat-trick in a dramatic finish at Old Trafford as Manchester United came from behind to snatch a 3-1 win over Premier League basement boys, Southampton.

United’s first-half performance seemed to undo much of the good work from their 2-2 draw at Liverpool and Sunday’s FA Cup penalty shoot-out at Arsenal as Southampton created chance after chance but only capitalised on one through a Manuel Ugarte own goal.

But as time ticked down Diallo would prove United’s saviour again. The Ivorian levelled in the 82nd minute and then, in the dying seconds of the 90 minutes, exchanged passes with Christian Eriksen before putting the hosts ahead.

He was not done there, capitalizing on a horrible error from Taylor Harwood-Bellis to grab a third in stoppage time.

It was another vital intervention from the 22-year-old, who grabbed the last-gasp winner in the Manchester derby last month before scoring a late equaliser in that draw at Anfield.

Yet for much of the night United appeared dangerously close to losing a fourth successive top-flight home game for the first time in 95 years.

Twelve minutes in, Kamaldeen Sulemana left Leny Yoro trailing in his wake before Andre Onana palmed away his low shot. Moments later Mateus Fernandes charged into the box before firing straight at the United goalkeeper.

The hosts responded as Rasmus Hojlund burst down the left and pulled the ball back for Alejandro Garnacho, starting his first league game since December 7. When the Argentinian somehow placed his shot wide, Hojlund kicked the post in frustration.

But the better chances came at the other end, where Onana made an outstanding double save in the 27th minute. Tyler Dibling spun clear of Lisandro Martinez before shooting at Onana and, when the ball fell for Matheus Fernandes, the keeper made an even better save to keep out his close-range effort.

Dibling shot over before Sulemana again beat Yoro, then ran past both Matthijs de Ligt and Martinez before bending a shot narrowly wide.

United did not even manage a shot on target until a tame effort from Bruno Fernandes was scooped up by Aaron Ramsdale in the 36th minute.

Few could deny Southampton deserved the lead they took two minutes before half-time, when Matheus Fernandes’ corner was flicked on by Dibling before striking Ugarte on the back and deflecting in.

Seconds later, Dibling might have doubled the advantage with a powerful shot palmed away by Onana, yet the Saints still led at half-time for only the third time this season.

The visitors started the second half strongly as well with Sulemana continuing to give Yoro a torrid time but United should have been level just before the hour.

Garnacho’s low ball was perfect for substitute Antony, but the much-maligned Brazilian got it it all wrong, his finish effectively a pass back to Ramsdale as Amorim put his head in his hands.

Instead they would leave it late. In the 82nd minute Kyle Walker-Peters blocked Diallo’s first effort but the ball came straight back to the Ivorian, who made no mistake the second time around.

Eight minutes later he had them level after a perfect combination with Eriksen but even Diallo was shaking his head in disbelief after Harwood-Bellis failed to control a pass from Ramsdale, allowing him to swoop in and apply the killer blow.
