Presidency Accuses Obasanjo of Weakening Nigeria’s Democracy

The presidency has attributed Nigeria’s prolonged democratic challenges to the leadership of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, claiming that his administration left a legacy of poor governance and unresolved crises.

This position was made clear by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Public Communication and Orientation, who accused Obasanjo of undermining democratic values during his tenure.

Dare argued that Obasanjo’s time in office was riddled with leadership failures, pointing to the infamous $16 billion spent on the power sector without tangible results.

He also highlighted Obasanjo’s failed attempt to amend the constitution for a third term, describing it as a reckless move that weakened democratic institutions.

He insisted that Obasanjo’s critiques of the current administration lack credibility, suggesting that the former president should focus on acknowledging his role in the nation’s problems.

According to Dare, Obasanjo’s leadership failed to establish the foundational infrastructure necessary for Nigeria’s progress.

The Tinubu administration, he stated, is working to repair the damage caused by past governments and is fully committed to its “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Despite criticisms, Dare assured Nigerians that President Tinubu remains focused on delivering economic reforms and alleviating the hardships faced by citizens.

Obasanjo’s recent remarks at an international forum, where he allegedly questioned the current government’s performance, were dismissed as insincere and misleading.

Dare described such comments as attempts to distort historical facts, emphasizing that Tinubu’s government is determined to chart a new course for the nation.

The presidency called on Obasanjo to take responsibility for his tenure’s shortcomings, while urging him to support ongoing efforts to rebuild the nation.
