The House of Representatives has dismissed a bill that aimed to introduce a six-year single term for the President, governors, and area council chairmen.

The bill, which was presented by Ikenga Ugochinyere from Imo State, along with 33 other lawmakers, also proposed a rotational presidency between the North and South regions and a similar rotation for state governors among the three senatorial districts.

The bill sought changes to Sections 76, 116, 132, and 136 of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that such amendments would promote inclusive governance and reduce the costs of elections.

It recommended synchronizing presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative elections to be held on the same day.

Additionally, it proposed that if the President-elect were unable to take office, the elected First Vice President would assume the presidency and appoint a new vice with National Assembly approval.

During the plenary, the bill was rejected after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas called for a voice vote.
