Additionally, 8,000 personnel from sister security agencies, including the armed forces and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), will be mobilized to support the police.

He also confirmed that security aides assigned to VIPs will be withdrawn to ensure neutrality and security.

Egbetokun stated this at the stakeholders meeting as part of activities ahead of the election organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) where its chairman, Professor Mamhud Yakubu announced that former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar was already in town presiding over the signing of the peace pact between contending parties and their candidates on Thursday.

The event had the representatives of the 17 participating political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), representatives of the palace of the Oba of Benin, civil society groups and others.

In his remarks, Egbetokun also said the suspension of the activities of quasi-security organizations like the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and others set up by the state government to check insecurity remain suspended and that they have no role to play on the day of election.

He said security aides attached to VIPs would also be withdrawn even as he reeled out the various election offences and warned that anyone caught against them would be treated according to the law.

  • Tinubu Didn’t extend IGP’s tenure – Police

    Tinubu Didn’t extend IGP’s tenure – Police

In what some Nigerians argue was like standing logic on its head, Nigeria Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi says President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
Hiding under some legalistic subterfuge he argues, “the President gave his approval to the law governing the tenure of the office as required.”
In a statement on Friday, Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP’s appointment is for four years.
“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to various misleading reports and misinterpretations concerning the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, and wishes to categorically state that what President Bola Tinubu approved for the IGP is not an extension of tenure, but rather the proper application of the law governing the tenure of the office of the IGP,” the statement read.
“Contrary to the misinformation being circulated on social media and in the news, an appointment letter in circulation was issued to the IGP shortly after his appointment was confirmed by the Police Council.
“This letter, dated 3rd November 2023, clearly stated that the President had approved a four-year tenure for the IGP in accordance with the provisions of Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”
The question some experts on service matters ask is whether it is possible for Mr. Egbotokun to still function in the office of Inspector General Police after his career life in the Nigeria Police Force had expired?
  • IGP: Egbetokun to remain in office till 2027

Continuing in the footsteps of former President Buhari, President Bola Tinubu has approved that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, remains in office until 2027.

According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964, is expected to retire in September 2024, when he clocks 60.
Against the backdrop of reports that his tenure was extended, a senior police source, who requested anonymity, clarified that the letter was not an extension but rather a confirmation that he should complete the four-year tenure as originally stated in his letter of appointment.
The source said, “The tenure of the IGP was not extended but rather a clarification on his letter of appointment that stipulated four years in office.”
In July, the National Assembly passed the Police Act Amendment Bill to enable a person appointed to the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment.
President Tinubu forwarded the Bill to the House of Representatives and Senate to amend the tenure of the IGP.
The Bill was expeditiously passed by lawmakers in both green and red chambers. The upper and lower chambers passed the bill at separate sittings.
The President appointed Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for four years. He was appointed alongside four new service chiefs.
At the moment, Egbetokun has been in office for one year and three months, with two years and nine months remaining of his four-year appointment.
The controversy about the tenure of IGP didn’t start with the current police boss. That of Egbetokun’s predecessor, Usman Baba, was not in any way different. Baba clocked 60 years old in March 2023 and attained the mandatory 35 years of service but he remained in office till Tinubu appointed Egbetokun as his replacement three months later
