In an effort to address the increasing death rate among retirees, the Federal Government has initiated a training program designed to promote self-reliance among retiring officers.

The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Ibrahim Dasuki-Arabi, shared this development during a training event in Gombe for retiring officers in the North-East region.

This five-day training program, which aims to equip retirees with essential skills, was introduced after it was observed that many retirees face challenges after leaving public service.

According to Dasuki-Arabi, the government seeks to help retirees remain productive by teaching them skills they can use after retirement.

Although the initial plan was to train 10,000 retirees, limited funding has restricted the current phase to 600 participants.

The government is hopeful that positive results from this initiative will lead to the approval of more resources for future training sessions.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to ensure that retirees can continue contributing to society, with follow-up evaluations planned to assess the impact of the training after a year.

At the event, some retirees expressed their appreciation for the program. Janet Ali-Kumo, a recently retired Chief Nursing Officer, suggested that capable retirees be given contract opportunities.

Tony Amaefule, a former Chief Lecturer, shared his experiences, emphasizing the importance of early financial planning for retirement.
