Odion Olaye, Edo state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has sparked controversy as he declares that the state will burn if Asue Ighodalor winner in the September 21 gubernatorial election. In a viral video, Olaye, while campaigning in Egor, Benin City, for Asue Ighodalo, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, assured supporters of victory. He predicted that Egor will be won by PDP, adding that the state “will burn” if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to declare Ighodalo winner of the poll.“I want to assure you that PDP, our party, is going to win Egor 80 percent come 21st of this month and on 22nd of this month, they must declare Asue Ighodalo the winner.“If they refuse to do that, Edo state will burn,” he said in the video. His comments come on the heels of allegations and counter allegations by parties. In one of the scenarios, the state PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, said it has uncovered plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to use fake INEC staff who would be posing as technical staff to tamper with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).Media Director of APC Campaign Council, Prince Kassim Afegbua, however dismissed the allegation. -

2027 Election: Labour Party and Others self-destruct
Apart from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, other leading players at the last election except the ruling All People’s Congress seem to be imploding, all as a result of frenzied moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For instance, both the PDP and the Labour Party, the first and second runners up at the 2023 presidential election have been neck deep in internal wranglings for no specific reasons other than the machinations of greedy party members to self destruct in favour of an individual’s ambition to conquere power in 2027.
In an apparent redundant move the Labour Party has revoked the automatic tickets previously reserved for its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, for the 2027 election.
The decision was made during the party’s National Executive Council meeting held on Monday, September 9, in Abuja.
Following the meeting, the party’s National Working Committee, led by Julius Abure, announced that all party tickets, from the presidency to the House of Assemblies, would now be open to all qualified Nigerians.
In a communique signed by the National Chairman of the party, Abure, and National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, the NEC nullified the decision taken at the stakeholders meeting convened by Otti.
The NEC insisted that there was no vacuum in the leadership of the party after “conducting its National Convention in line with its constitution, the Electoral Act and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on March 27, 2024.”

Rivers LG Election: Court reserves judgment in APC’s suit against INEC, others
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court Abuja, Thursday, reserved judgment in the suit filed by the All Progressives Congress, (APC) against the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) against the conduct of local government election in Rivers State.
After listening to the counsel to both parties adopted thier various arguments, the court reserved judgement on the matter to a date that will be communicated to them.
The judge on Thursday reserved judgment date after counsel to all parties adopted their various legal positions for and against the suit.
The court listened to all pending preliminary applications including those seeking joinder brought by the Social Democratic Party, SDP and the Boot Party, BP, as well as the substantive suit.
The court equally heard motions filed by Chief Goddy Uche, SAN, for change of counsel and another seeking the discontinuance of the suit on behalf of the Rivers State chapter of the APC.
Uche filed and argued an application for change of counsel dated August 28 as well as a motion for the discontinuance of the suit signed by Chief Emeka Beke, Chairman APC Rivers State, and Sam Sam Etetegwung, Secretary APC Rivers State, respectively.
While Joseph Daudu, SAN, leading six Senior Advocates of Nigeria including Dr James Ogwu Onoja, moved the court to grant the reliefs sought by the plaintiff, Taiwo Taiwo, SAN, for the Attorney General of Rivers State, and Femi Falana, SAN, representing the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, all challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the case.
The respondents counsel equally challenged the competence of the suit on the ground that it was statute barred.
In addition, on the issue of jurisdiction, the respondents’ counsel argued that the proper court with jurisdiction to entertain the case is the Rivers State division of the Federal High Court.
It was equally their argument that the court sitting as a vacation court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case without obtaining the consent of both parties.
Substantially, the plaintiff counsel argued that the condition precedent for conduct of local government election in Rivers State have not been met by RSIEC.
The plaintiff had approached the court with an application for change of counsel dated August 28, as well as a notice of discontinuance signed by Chief Emeka Beke, Chairman APC Rivers State, and Sam Sam Etetegwung, Secretary, APC Rivers State respectively.
The party, in an originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/987/2024 is seeking a declaration that INEC is bound to manage the updating and revising of the register in such a manner as to ensure that the process stops not later than 90 days before the council poll.

Childless Attack: Oluremi Tinubu summons Oshiomhole
The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has allegedly summoned the lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, over controversial comments he made regarding Betsy Obaseki, wife of the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.Oshiomhole in a press interview with some selected journalists had said Governor Obaseki and his wife do not have love for children. The former governor of Edo State stated this in response to an alleged statement from Betsy Obaseki, in which she claimed that only the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, does not have a wife, amongst the contenders in the state. The lawmaker in his reaction said Obaseki and his wife have been childless since they got married and have also refused to adopt any child because they do not love children. The statement has been widely condemned by Nigerians across board, ahead of the governorship election in the state.Sources within Aso Rock who spoke on the development with News Direct noted that the First Lady was deeply embarrassed and angered by Oshiomhole’s remarks. One of the sources said, “Senator Oluremi Tinubu was visibly enraged when she learned about Oshiomhole’s comments concerning Mrs. Obaseki.“She could not believe that a seasoned politician like Oshiomhole would stoop so low as to make such insensitive remarks about a woman’s personal life. It’s an affront to decency and to the values we should uphold in our political discourse.”The source added that the First Lady, known for her strong stance on issues affecting women and her advocacy for ethical conduct in politics, felt compelled to address the matter directly. The source said, “Mrs Tinubu does not condone the use of personal tragedies or circumstances as political tools, and she wanted to make it clear to Oshiomhole that such behaviour is unacceptable.”Another Aso Rock official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “This isn’t just about Mrs. Obaseki; it’s about the implications of dragging personal issues into the political sphere. Senator Tinubu has always believed in politics driven by ideas and development rather than personal attacks and character assassination.” -
Tinubu’s contemptuous of Nigerians
“Tinubu was a two-term governor of Lagos state from 1999-2007. At that time, he was ruthless and manipulative. The only person that mattered to him then, and now, was himself. His manipulative nature and self -centredness can be attested to by a faction of Afenifere, the umbrella Yoruba sociocultural-cum political organisation.”
IN their heart of hearts even the most ardent supporters of Nigeria’s president know that Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu is contemptuous of Nigerians. But in fairness to him, his contempt for the people did not just manifest after he was controversially and surreptitiously awarded the presidential election by the corrupt and inept ‘Independent’ National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the dead of the night on March 1, 2023.
Tinubu was a two-term governor of Lagos state from 1999-2007. At that time, he was ruthless and manipulative. The only person that mattered to him then, and now, was himself. His manipulative nature and self -centredness can be attested to by a faction of Afenifere, the umbrella Yoruba sociocultural-cum political organisation. For his ruthlessness, those who have had to cross his path in his decades – long pursuit of his political and economic ambitions (which by the way cannot be separated), including survivors of the families of his rivals, have a tonne of tales to tell. They are not palatable stories. If Afenifere is today fractionalised it is down to the ruthlessness and selfishness of one man.
A Legacy of Heist
In the preceding paragraph we said that Tinubu ruled Lagos state for eight years. No. We were wrong. Until he was created as Nigeria’s president last year, Tinubu remained the de facto governor of Lagos. He still is. He is like the animal called ikiri among Ndigbo. Once this animal has its hands on a prey or its mouth in a cookie jar, it will never let go. Tinubu does not let go. Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, alluded to this avaricious nature of Tinubu in his press statement last week. Atiku named two companies which have long been associated with the president – Alpha Beta and Primero – which he alleged constituted direct financial pipelines from the coffers of Lagos state government to an individual’s bank account.
Atiku had alleged in a press release that “Nigeria is rapidly transforming into a government of Tinubu, by Tinubu, and for Tinubu”, and that the “future of Nigerians has been effectively mortgaged to President Bola Tinubu, his family, and associates “, so much so that even when Tinubu leaves office, it will be nearly impossible to break the shackles. He alleged that: “Just as Alpha Beta, Primero, and others act as Tinubu’s proxies in Lagos, managing critical sectors and generating revenues for him, and his family, he has begun to replicate this at the federal level”.
The former vice president spoke in the wake of the shenanigans between the state oil corporation, NNPCL, its retail arm and a private firm, OVH. Wale Tinubu’s Oando is alleged to own 49% of OVH. Wale Tinubu is reportedly a cousin to Bola Tinubu who, in addition to being Nigeria’s president, is also the country’s petroleum resources minister. NNPCL has refuted the linkage.
Whether the mounting allegations of governance malpractices against Tinubu are true or not, it has to be noted that the tell-tale signs of the proclivity of the man have been in the public domain for at least 25 years. The fear of a section of the population that the president will be tempted or disposed to making Nigeria a bigger specimen of Lagos was not diminished by the boasting of Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, the president’s wife in 2023, to the effect that her family had been so blessed materially and financially that they would have no need to live off the paltry resources of Nigeria. Within 14 months her boasting which she reportedly made on the altar of God, a merciful Father and a consuming fire, has turned out not to be true. Oluremi Tinubu is said to be a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Lies About Subsidy
Tinubu’s contempt for Nigerians started the very day he took his oath of office and oath of allegiance. Before that day actually. Right on the podium at the Eagle Square in Abuja on May 29, 2023, the president decreed the immediate scrapping of petrol subsidy. By the time he made this weighty declaration, his regime as personified by a Cabinet was not in place. There was no evidence that he consulted anybody including stakeholders in that sector of the economy. His rationalisation was that the petrol subsidy would bankrupt the country, and that his rivals to the presidency had promised to do the same during the campaigns. Both were lies because the regime is currently paying more for petrol subsidy, and the presidential candidates may have promised to remove petrol subsidy but there was no unanimity on how to do it. Tinubu took that action not because he did not know the implications and dire consequences of the move. He knew but he proceeded to do it anyway because he holds Nigerians in disdain. He probably enjoys seeing faces contorted in pain. What a pervert! This same man had in January 2012, eleven years prior, warned President Goodluck Jonathan, in an open letter, of the inevitable deleterious effects of subsidy removal. He was then the leader of the opposition party. The very things he predicted would happen in 2012 if Jonathan scrapped petrol subsidy happened in 2023 when he went against his own counsel- prices spiked, the economy nose-dived, inflation rose, poverty heightened and despondency spread.
The Devaluation Woes and Petrol Scarcity
His statement of ‘subsidy is gone’ was made in May of 2023. The very next month, in June, he devalued the Naira, and left the value of the national currency to the so-called free market forces. Again, his rationalisation was that the federal government could no longer afford to defend the Naira. Did this sound similar to his excuse for petrol subsidy removal? Tinubu yet displayed a disdain for Nigerians, lack of empathy, unconcern for the privations citizens were grappling with on account of petrol subsidy removal, and little knowledge of basic economics. Nigeria virtually exports nothing of value except crude oil over which it has no control of the price in the international market. Tinubu prides himself as an accountant with global clout but failed to realise that the massive devaluation of the national currency would only be more beneficial if the country was a net exporter of goods and services. Naira devaluation succeeded only in creating employment abroad, driving remnants of manufacturers away, forcing domestic producers to close shop, and exacerbating the import of inflation. The tragedy is that Nigeria is trapped.
And to imagine that in spite of the dizzyingly devaluation of the Naira, the central bank is still defending the currency. The Tinubu regime has continued with the Muhammadu Buhari style of using the foreign reserves and hot money (foreign portfolio investments) to prop up the value of the Naira. Nigerians now scoff whenever the government boasts about the accression to the reserves because they know that at any point in time a significant portion of the reserves is encumbered.
In barely one year the exchange rate of the Naira to the dollar has plummeted from about N700/$1 to over N1,600/$1. And we have not seen the end of it. The situation is worse in the petrol subsidy sector. Before Tinubu, about N3 trillion Naira was claimed as subsidy in one year. In 2024 which will be the one full year under Tinubu after discounting May – December 2023, the central bank is projecting that about N5 trillion would be expended on the same subsidy that was scrapped last year.
But the projected expenditures on the so-called subsidy on petrol is the least of the problems facing Nigerians. The greater concern is that while the erstwhile subsidy regime was riddled with brazen corruption, the extant government has further made its administration opaque. For a start, there was no provision for subsidy in the 2024 national budget. However, subsidies have been incurred since January, indeed since the second half of 2023. Presently, petrol is scarce in many parts of the country. This was supposed to be one of the ills that the regime said that the removal of subsidy will cure. But in the fifteen months since petrol subsidy was supposedly yanked off, the country has suffered at least four bouts of scarcity.
One litre of petrol currently sells for anything between N700 and N1,200 in parts of the country. In some locations, one litre of petrol costs as much as N2000. But the official price ranges from between N620-N750 per litre. However, as at the last count the landing cost of the product was put at about N1,150. So going by the official selling price and the reported landing price, there’s a price difference of about 50%. In other words, the proclamation last year that subsidy was gone was a lie. The NNPCL which is a cesspit of corruption has said it is absorbing the difference and that it was not paying any marketer any kobo for subsidy. What this means is that NNPCL is the sole importer of petrol; it determines the quantity it imports; it is responsible for determining the number of litres we consume in the country; and, it calculates the amount of subsidy per litre. On this issue NNPCL is a monopoly. But who will query an agency which reports to President Tinubu who doubles as the petroleum resources minister. Some other Nigerian presidents appointed oil ministers but not Buhari, and so far, not Tinubu. If this arrangement under the successive regimes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not mirror corruption, then it will be hard to find what does.
*Next week we’ll continue this interrogation with a different headline highlighting political malpractices and governance malfeasance.

2027: Forget Re-election, North tells Tinubu
Several northern political figures and groups have expressed deep dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing him of neglecting northern interests and mistreating the politicians whose support helped him rise to power. These grievances range from concerns about governance and security to the perception that Tinubu has favored the Yoruba ethnic group in major government appointments at the expense of northern representation.Prominent northern leaders have pointed to the concentration of key positions, such as the Petroleum Minister, Finance Minister, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and others, in the hands of the Yoruba ethnic group. They argue that since Nigeria’s independence, no ethnic group has held such a large number of influential roles simultaneously. This perceived marginalization has fueled growing resentment within the northern political establishment. The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), a significant socio-political group in the region, has voiced regret over supporting Tinubu in the 2023 elections.According to Vanguard, Professor Usman Yusuf, a member of the NEF, reportedly lamented that Tinubu’s administration has led to “deception, destitution, and hopelessness” for many in the North. He said, “People have lost hope. It pains me to see our people lining up to collect cups of palliatives. Renewed Hope has turned into hopelessness. People have lost hope.”NEF Spokesman, Abdulaziz Sulaiman echoed these sentiments, promising that the North would not repeat the mistake of backing Tinubu in 2027.The North-East Governors’ Forum has also raised concerns, accusing Tinubu’s administration of neglecting their region, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development and electricity provision. The forum’s chairman, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, highlighted the lack of road and rail connections between the South-East and North-East as a particular grievance.Recent meetings among northern political heavyweights, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir, El-Rufai and NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as visits by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to former President, Muhammadu Buhari, have further stoked speculation of a northern political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.Although Atiku described his visit as a Sallah homage, many analysts view these moves as strategic positioning for the next presidential contest -
Bayelsa Guber: Supreme court authenticates Gov Diri’s election
The Supreme Court, Friday, declared that Duoye Diri, remains the authentic governor of Bayelsa State.
The Apex court affirmed the re-election of Diri after dismissing the appeal of the candidate of All Progressive Congress(APC) Timipre Sylva, in the November 11 off-cycle election.
The five-man panel of the supreme court lead by Justice Lawal Garba, affirmed the Court of Appeal decision of 15 July, that declared Sylva’s appeal an abuse of court process for filing two notices of appeal.
Citing a part of section 246(1) of the 1999 Constitution, the Apex Court panel held that the APC Governorship candidate has only one right to appeal the judgment of the Tribunal and not multiple.
Consequently, it faulted the APC appellant who filed two notices of appeal to the Appellate Court.
In a unanimous judgment, the appeal was therefore dismissed by the Supreme Court for lacking merit.
The Electoral body, INEC had declared that governor Diri of the PDP garnered a total of 175,196 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sylva of the APC who polled 110,108 votes.
The unanimous decision of the apex court upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal and the Election Petition Tribunal.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja had on July 18 in a unanimous judgment affirmed the decision of the Bayelsa Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which upheld the November 11, 2023, re-election of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State.
A 3-man panel of the appellate court had dismissed an appeal brought before the Court by Timipre Sylva and APC seeking to set aside the decision of the Tribunal.
The Justice Adekunle Adeleye-led three-member tribunal had on May 27, dismissed the petition filed against Governor Diri’s re-election by the APC and its candidate for lacking in merit.
The tribunal had held that both Sylva and APC failed to adduce any credible evidence to substantiate any of the allegations they raised against the outcome of the governorship poll.
