Why I Withdrew From Presidential Race – Biden

President Joe Biden of the United States (US) has explained why he withdrew from the November 5 election.

Biden, 81, served as deputy of Barack Obama, during his two terms as America’s number one citizen.

Like Obama and other Democrats, Biden lined up behind Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Presidential election won by President Donald Trump.

Four years later, Biden defeated Trump who was seeking reelection. Then 77, he had made history as the oldest person to be elected into the Oval Office.

However, his presidency has been marred with controversies, especially on account of ill-health and fitness.

The issue reached its height after Trump defeated him by a wide margin in a presidential debate some weeks ago.

Biden had consistently resisted pressure to quit until he announced it in a post on his X handle, on Sunday.

While announcing his decision to step down, Biden said he would remain as President and Commander-in-Chief until his term ends in January 2025.

Speaking in a televised address on Wednesday night, Biden said he ended his re-election campaign in a bid to save US democracy.

According to him, he endorsed his deputy, Kamala Harris, to unite their fellow Democrats and the country.

He said: “I revere this office. But I love my country more. I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.

“That is the best way to unite our nation.”

The US president said he believed his record warranted a second term, but “nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition”.

He added: “The great thing about America is here, kings and dictators do not rule. The people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands.”

Biden is the first sitting president not to seek re-election since 1968 when Lyndon Johnson halted his campaign as his popularity sank during the Vietnam War.

Meanwhile, US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump launched a volley of attacks against Harris on Wednesday.

In his first rally since Harris became the de facto Democratic Party nominee, Trump described her as a “radical left lunatic”.

He also claimed that the US vice president was in favor of the “execution” of babies due to her position on abortions.

“She is a radical left lunatic who will destroy our country,” the former president and Republican nominee said.

So far, opinion polls indicate a tight race between the former president and Harris in a hypothetical match-up.

Plane crash kills 18 in Nepal

    By Doris Isreal Ijeoma

An airplane has crashed in Nepal, claiming the lives of 18 people.

The airplane on the fleet of Nepal’s Saurya Airlines caught fire after skidding off the runway while taking off at Tribhuvan International Airport in the country’s capital, Kathmandu, on Wednesday.

Officials said the affected plane, carrying two crew members and 17 technicians, was going for regular maintenance to Nepal’s new Pokhara airport, which opened last January.

“Only the captain was rescued alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital,” the spokesman for Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, Tej Bahadur Poudyal, explained.

Visuals have shown the plane flying a little above the runway and then tilting before it crashed.

Nepal has a poor air safety record; a country often referred to as one of the riskiest places to fly, particularly because of its mountainous terrain.

Also, the country, which is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Everest, has a weather pattern that can change suddenly, and airstrips are typically sited in difficult-to-reach, mountainous areas.

It is on record that nearly 350 people have died in plane or helicopter crashes in the country since 2000.

Just last year, 72 people died in a Yeti Airlines crash, an incident later blamed on the pilot who was said to have cut off power by mistake

Before the year 2000, the deadliest incident occurred in 1992, when a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus crashed into a hillside while approaching Kathmandu, killing 167 people.

Trump Assassination Attempt: US Secret Service Director Resigns

The United States, US, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned following backlash over the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, sources tell CNN.

There have been calls for Cheatle’s resignation and a push by Republican lawmakers to impeach her.

Lawmakers were particularly incensed after her appearance for public testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee on Monday, where she was unwilling to answer many of the committee’s questions.

In the initial wake of the shooting, Cheatle was emphatic that she would not step down.

Cheatle was appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the Secret Service in 2022.

A few weeks ago, a 20-year-old bypassed Secret Services agents and shot at Trump during his presidential campaign in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The bullets only narrowly missed Trump’s head but hit him in the ear.

  • African Leaders Urged to Defend Dangote Refinery Amidst Imperialist Threats

African Leaders Urged to Defend Dangote Refinery Amidst Imperialist Threats

His Imperial Highness Prince Estifanos Matewos, President of the United Africa Royal Assembly (UARA), has called on African leaders to rally in support of Mr. Aliko Dangote, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) and owner of the Dangote Refinery, who he claims is currently under attack from forces of imperialism and neo-colonialism.

According to Prince Matewos, these attacks are not just against an individual but also against the Pan-African vision and the future of the continent.

The statement, signed by Prince Matewos, emphasizes the Dangote Refinery’s importance as a revolutionary step towards self-sufficiency and economic empowerment for Africa.

The refinery represents a shift away from the historical exploitation of African resources by external powers, which has left the continent impoverished and dependent.

The refinery offers a pathway to retaining Africa’s wealth within the continent, creating jobs, and fostering economic opportunities for its people. However, external forces, backed by major foreign companies, reportedly aim to dismantle this symbol of hope within the next five years.

These forces, according to Prince Matewos, are funding efforts to ensure the refinery’s destruction to maintain their control over Africa’s resources and keep its people in perpetual poverty.

“The attacks on the Dangote Refinery and the Dangote Group are clandestinely funded by powerful interests seeking to destabilize progress in Nigeria,” Prince Matewos stated. “These shadowy forces must be exposed and resisted. It is imperative that Africans unite in defense of the refinery, which symbolizes collective aspirations for economic freedom and self-reliance. An attack on Dangote is an attack on all Africans, and solidarity is crucial.”

UARA is calling on all African heads of state, ministers, and leaders of crude oil-producing countries to protect the Dangote Refinery. Traditional and spiritual leaders are also urged to join this fight as custodians of African heritage and champions of the future.

Prince Matewos also highlighted Aliko Dangote’s contributions during crises, such as the Ebola outbreak, where his swift actions and resources saved countless lives.

“In unity, there is strength. Africans are encouraged to redirect their supply chains to support the Dangote Refinery, ensuring it thrives and fulfills its promise to the continent. By doing so, Africa will keep its wealth within the continent, create jobs, and secure a prosperous future for generations to come.”

“Stand with Aliko Dangote. Stand with the Dangote Refinery. Stand for Africa’s sovereignty and economic liberation. Together, we shall overcome,” he added.

Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House Press Secretary, confirmed that President Biden, who is vaccinated and has received booster shots, tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The 81-year-old President was active earlier in the day, visiting supporters in Las Vegas and speaking at an event.

However, a scheduled campaign speech later in the night was cancelled following the positive test result.

Jean-Pierre stated that President Biden plans to isolate at his home in Delaware while continuing to perform “all of his duties fully.”

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the President’s doctor, reported that Biden has presented with upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and a cough.

The President has started a course of Paxlovid, an antiviral medication used to treat Covid-19.

In a tweet, President Biden expressed gratitude for the well wishes and assured the public of his commitment to continue working during his recovery.

The President’s positive test comes amid increasing pressure from within his party regarding concerns about his age and its potential impact on his candidacy for re-election.

According to US media, Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader, Hakeem Jefferies have privately met with President Biden to express their concerns that his candidacy could adversely affect other House and Senate races.

President Biden took to Twitter to address the situation.

In one tweet, he thanked everyone for their well wishes and reassured the public that he would continue to work during his recovery.

In another tweet, he humorously remarked, “I’m sick… of Elon Musk and his rich buddies trying to buy this election. And if you agree, pitch in here.”

Nelson Mandela Day:Group Calls for Continuation of His Legacies

In commemoration of the 2024 Nelson Mandela Day, His Imperial Highness, Prince Estifanos Matewos, President of the United Africa Royal Assembly (UARA) has called for the continuation of legacies of the late Nelson Mandela, reflecting on the enduring legacy of a man whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and freedom continues to inspire millions .

This was contained in a statement personally signed by him and made available to newsmen.

He stated that, as they remember Madiba’s profound impact, they are reminded that the long walk to freedom he embarked on is far from complete; making it incumbent to advance the late leader’s legacies with collective action, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to his principles.

“The United Africa Royal Assembly recently congratulated His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa on his re-election as President of South Africa. The historical government of national unity under President Ramaphosa’s leadership then committed to uphold principles of non-racialism, non-sexism and justice. We must not lose sight of these promises and the gains of the revolution that Madiba and many of our great African liberators sacrificed their lives for.”

  • Elon Musk pledges $45 million a month to electing Trump

Elon Musk pledges $45 million a month to electing Trump

    By Doris Isreal Ijeoma

Tech billionaire Elon Musk said he plans to commit roughly $45 million each month to a new fund backing Donald Trump for US president, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Musk’s donations will go to a political group dubbed America PAC, which will focus on promoting voter registration, early voting and mail-in ballots among residents in swing states ahead of the November general election, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Musk is one of several major backers of the new fund, with others reportedly including Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, former US ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and cryptocurrency investors Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.

The Tesla founder formally endorsed Trump’s candidacy for US president on Saturday after the former president survived a shooting at a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on the social media platform X, which he acquired in 2022.

Musk, the wealthiest man in the world with an estimated net worth of $250 billion, has grown increasingly friendly with Trump over the course of the 2024 US election.

In March, the two met in person during a donor breakfast hosted at the Florida residence of billionaire Nelson Peltz.

Though individual campaign donations in the United States are capped at $3,300 per person, loopholes in the campaign finance system allow political mega donors to contribute to funds known as political action committees or “PACs,” which support candidates.

Trump previously decried mail and absentee voting, but has backtracked on his criticisms after it became clear Democrats had an edge among mail voters.
