Francisca Maduneme releases two inspirational books

Two inspirational books, titled Standout Child and The Ministry of Ruth will be presented to the public at mid day on Saturday October 4,2025 at the Merit House, Maitama, Abuja.

The books were written by Mrs. Francisca Uloma Maduneme, a public servant and a preacher.

The two books hold up possibilities for women, in the face of odds that often undermine their attaining their full potentials.

A statement made available to Nigerian Anchor, Thursday in Abuja explains that the books are inspirational and prescriptive.

“Defeating poverty, deprivation and cultural barriers to record success remain a daunting challenge for women, more so in such a society as ours,” it was asserted.

“In spite of the odds, possibilities exist for the girl child and women to make good. It takes perseverance, family support, wisdom and God’s hand to make this happen.”

It was stated that “Francisca Uloma Maduneme deploys her creative mind to explore the themes of perseverance, loyalty, determination and family support as ingredients for career and relationship success for women.”

While Standout Child anchors its theme on faith, resilience and education as the pathway for young persons to beats life’s odds, The Ministry of Ruth is steeped in Biblical narratives, from which the author drew timeless lessons in wisdom and faithfulness that women of all ages will find useful.

Through the story of a remarkable relationship of Naomi and Ruth, a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law, forged in shared loss and affinity, Francisca Maduneme speaks to women, dwelling on all that is possible and indeed, desirable in such a relationship, when wisdom prevails.

The Ministry of Ruth points the way for women to achieve harmony in their lives and in their relationship with such significant persons around them like their mother-in-law, more so in a culture with extended family ties that often define the success or otherwise of enduring relationship.

    Association berates Dangote anti-workers practices

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has expressed displeasure over the anti-workers practices displayed by Dangote Refinery.

The National President of ASCSN, Mr Shehu Mohammed, in a statement on Monday, said that the arbitrary dismissal of workers for exercising their constitutional right to freely associate and belong to a trade union was a gross violation.

Mohammed said that the arbitrary dismissal of workers was a gross violation of Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution and a direct breach of Nigeria’s obligations under International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.

He expressed total solidarity with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), in condemning the unjust and anti-labour practices carried out by the management of Dangote Refinery.

“Such acts are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in a democracy. We, therefore, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with TUC and PENGASSAN in demanding the immediate reinstatement of all affected workers.

“We support the call for an independent investigation into the refinery’s anti-worker practices,” the national president said.

He commended the decision of TUC to place affiliates on stand-by for a possible national action should the demands not be met.

Mohammed warned that if the matter was not resolved within a reasonable time frame, the ASCSN might be compelled to join the national action in full force, in defence of workers’ rights and to ensure justice was done.

“An injury to one worker is an injury to all. No employer, regardless of size or influence, will be allowed to trample upon the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers,”

  • 2027: Friendship Won’t Stop Me from Opposing Tinubu – Lamido

2027: Friendship Won’t Stop Me from Opposing Tinubu – Lamido

The former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido has declared that his longstanding friendship with President Bola Tinubu will not prevent him from working against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Lamido, in an interview with the BBC, emphasized that politics and friendship must remain separate, insisting his loyalty lies with Nigeria’s progress and the survival of the opposition.

“Tinubu and I know each other very well, but we haven’t met in a while.

He told me, ‘Sule, I love you because you are trustworthy.’ We laughed and left. But that doesn’t change politics. My duty is to unite Nigerians in opposition to his government,” Lamido said.

The comment came after Lamido and Tinubu were seen laughing and exchanging pleasantries at the wedding of former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari’s son in Kaduna, fueling speculation about their political alignment.

Lamido dismissed the speculation, stressing that his commitment is to mobilize opposition forces against what he described as the APC-led government’s failures on insecurity, economic hardship, and national unity.

He further reiterated his loyalty to the PDP despite recent high-profile defections, including that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). “Atiku and I formed the PDP.

We are still talking to many Nigerians who were once with us but are now scattered. What we are doing is for the people, not ourselves,” Lamido said.

The former governor added that the PDP is working to resolve its internal crises and strengthen unity ahead of 2027.

“We are constantly engaging, reaching compromises where needed, and ensuring dialogue continues. Nigeria must move forward, and we will hold Tinubu accountable,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State APC dismissed opposition claims, including suggestions that President Tinubu would serve only one term.

APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described such comments as “wishful thinking from political lightweights,” insisting Tinubu is laying the foundation for long-term transformation.

With Lamido maintaining his opposition stance and the PDP struggling to reorganize, the 2027 elections are already shaping up to be a fierce political contest.

  • Tinubu Urges Bold UN, Financial Reforms at UNGA80

Tinubu Urges Bold UN, Financial Reforms at UNGA80

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for sweeping reforms to restore the credibility of the United Nations and global financial systems, urging world leaders to adapt institutions to present-day realities.

Speaking through Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, Tinubu said the world could not afford “the luxury of inaction” in the face of conflicts, climate change, debt crises, and widening inequality.

“The United Nations will recover its relevance only when it reflects the world as it is, not as it was,” Tinubu declared, arguing that Nigeria deserves a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. He noted that while Nigeria was a colony of 20 million when the UN was founded in 1945, it is now a sovereign state of more than 236 million, projected to be the world’s third most populous country.

He outlined four priorities for change which includes:

    a) Security Council Reform: that is it’s expansion to reflect current global realities, including Nigeria’s representation.

    b) Debt Relief and Fair Financing: as a new binding mechanism for sovereign debt management, “an International Court of Justice for money.”

    c) Resource Equity: by ensuring mineral-rich countries to benefit directly from their resources through local processing and jobs, and;

    d) Closing the digital divide as a global initiative to expand technology access, declaring that “A.I. must stand for ‘Africa Included.’”

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to peace, Tinubu highlighted the country’s participation in 51 of 60 UN peacekeeping operations since 1960. He also backed a two-state solution in Palestine, saying the right to life “should not be trapped in the corridors of endless debate.”

On regional security, he warned against terrorism and extremism, describing them as threats that prey on division and undermine human dignity.

Tinubu further described climate change as a pressing security concern tied to migration, instability, and inequality, urging the UN to channel climate funds into education, resilient housing, and community development.

Referencing Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, including subsidy removals and currency adjustments, Tinubu acknowledged the hardship but said they were necessary steps to unlock growth and attract investment.

He pointed to the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit held in Abuja as proof of Africa’s potential when innovation and investment intersect.

Warning against growing disillusionment with multilateralism, Tinubu said: “We must make real change, change that works, and change that is seen to work. If we fail, the direction of travel is already predictable.”

He closed with a reminder of shared responsibility: “For none of us is safe until all of us are safe.”

  • Libya erupts again!

    Libya erupts again!

Heavy clashes in western city of Zawiya

Heavy clashes erupted Wednesday in the western Libyan city of Zawiya, between rival factions affiliated with the Government of National Unity (GNU).

According to the Libyan News Agency (LANA), the fighting broke out between the GNU Interior Ministry’s Security Threats Apparatus and a local armed group known as Al-Kaboutat, which is linked to the Defense Ministry.

The clashes were triggered by the apparatus’s arrest of several members of Al-Kaboutat.

Local media said the fighting killed a member of the Petroleum Facilities Guard when a mortar shell struck near him. No further information on casualties has been released.

Sources said the clashes quickly spread into residential neighborhoods and around the city’s oil refinery. Videos circulating on social media showed the use of medium and heavy weapons.

Heavy military reinforcements were also deployed on main roads, including the coastal highway, which was blocked with sand barriers.

No official statements have been issued by the government or security bodies on efforts to contain the violence, while residents voiced concern over the fighting’s proximity to schools and vital facilities.

In a statement carried by LANA, the Zawiya Oil Refining Company expressed “deep concern” over the dangers posed by the clashes near its facilities, warning of “serious threats to lives and vital infrastructure.”

The company called for an immediate ceasefire and urged authorities to secure the complex, stressing that any attack on the refinery “would directly undermine the resources of the Libyan people and their national wealth.”

Meanwhile, the Zawiya Education Directorate announced the suspension of classes in all city schools to protect students and staff. Local authorities also urged residents to stay indoors and venture out only if absolutely necessary.

The violence came amid rising armed confrontations among factions and militias in western Libya. Over the past week, clashes were reported in Janzour, 12 km west of Tripoli, and in the city of Sorman.

Observers said the latest escalation underscores the ongoing political and security crisis in Libya, driven by the lack of a final resolution to the conflict between rival governments.

Libya has remained divided since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The country is split between rival administrations: the GNU in Tripoli and an eastern-based government backed by the Libyan National Army under commander Khalifa Haftar.

  • Drug abuse among youth threatens Nigeria’s future, Marwa warns

Drug abuse among youth threatens Nigeria’s future, Marwa warns

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman, Brig. Buba Marwa (rtd) has raised the alarm, warning that drug abuse among the youth threatens Nigeria’s future.

Marwa gave the warning, Tuesday in Abuja while delivering a keynote address at the Football Anti-Drug Abuse Programme.

The programme was tagged “Kick Out Drug Abuse” (KODA), and was organised by Richy Gold International Ltd in partnership with NDLEA.

He commended the organisers for creatively using the power of football, the world’s most loved sport, to engage youths in positive and life-transforming activities.

According to Brigadier Marwa, substances such as tobacco, alcohol, cannabis sativa, tramadol, codeine mixtures, cocaine and methamphetamine are sadly being abused in schools, communities and even sporting circles.

“These substances rob young people of their health, potential and future. The devastating consequences are broken homes, wasted talents, increased crime rate, violence and shattered communities,” he said.

The NDLEA boss emphasised that prevention remained the best defence.

Marwa stressed that the football-based sensitisation programme underscored the value of using sports to steer youths away from destructive habits.

“Football teaches discipline, teamwork, resilience and determination. Every pass, every goal and every victory comes from focus and commitment.

“Similarly, in life, our youths are constantly faced with choices, whether to stay on the path of discipline or to fall into the dangerous trap of drug abuse.

“Just as one reckless foul can cost a team a match, one poor choice to experiment with drugs can destroy dreams, ruin careers and even cut short lives,” Marwa said.

The NDLEA boss reminded the youths that professional footballers, whether in local leagues or on the international stage, sustained their excellence by maintaining drug-free lifestyles.

According to him, to win in football and in life, one must stay drug-free. No footballer who abuses drugs can sustain excellence on the pitch.

“Therefore, I charge every young person here. Let football inspire you to channel your energy into creativity, hard work and teamwork.

“Let the slogan ‘Kick Out Drug Abuse’ be more than words. Let it be your lifestyle. Remember, when you say no to drugs, you are saying yes to your dreams, your health and your future.”

Marwa reiterated NDLEA’s full commitment to keeping drugs off Nigeria’s streets, out of schools and far away from the nation’s youths.

He explained that the agency was strengthening prevention programmes, promoting counselling and rehabilitation for users who need help.

He added that the agency was also deepening partnerships with ministries, agencies, schools, sports bodies, religious groups and community leaders among others.

According to him, emphasis is placed on prevention targeting young people both in and out of school, with interventions designed to delay initiation into drug use while providing support for those already using.

“However, the fight against drug abuse cannot be won by NDLEA alone.

“We enjoin every young person to be a champion in your own corner, rejecting drugs and influencing your peers positively,” he added.

The Managing Director, RICHYGOLD International Ltd, Mr Jude Onwusonye said that beyond manufacturing, the organisation was proud to champion social impact through its flagship campaign, KODA.

Onwusonye said that KODA was more than a project, adding that it was a clarion call in partnership with relevant agencies.

This, he said, was to safeguard the future of the youth, combat the menace of drug abuse and inspire a healthier, more productive society.

“At RICHYGOLD International Ltd, we don’t just make pharmaceutical products, we build healthier communities, restore hope and fuel dreams.

“With innovation, integrity and compassion at our core, we are redefining pharmaceutical excellence while leading the charge for a drug-free generation.”

  • Alleged bribe of $6b: EFCC re-arraigns ex-Power Minister, Agunloye

Alleged bribe of $6b: EFCC re-arraigns ex-Power Minister, Agunloye

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday re-arraigned Dr Olu Agunloye for alleged infractions in the award of contract for Mambila Hydroelectric Power Station.

Dr. Agunloye was alleged to have perpetrated the fraudulent act while acting as the Minister of Power and Steel.

The EFCC had dragged Agunloye, before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Apo, Abuja, on amended seven count- charge, bordering on disobedient to presidential directive, forgery and receiving gratification.

At the resumed hearing in the matter, Prosecution counsel, M. K. Hussain, holding the brief of Abba Muhammed, SAN, informed the court that he was ready for the cross examination of PW3.

He also stated that, the prosecution had filed its second amended charge against the defendant.

He urged the court to allow the defendant to take his plea on the second amended charge.

But Counsel for Agunloye, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, did not object to his client taking plea to the second amended charge.

The amended seven count charge was subsequently read to the defendant and Agunloye, however, pleaded not guilty to the amended charge.

In the amended charge marked FCT/HC/CR/617/2023, EFCC alleged that Agunloye on May 22, 2003 knowingly disobeyed the directive of the President made at the Federal Executive Council meeting of May 21, 2023.

He claimed that the directive was in pursuant to the President’s powers under Section 5(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The prosecution further alleged that the defendant went ahead and signed a letter addressed to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited (SPTCL), conveying the “approval of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the construction of the 3,960 megawatts Mambila Hydroelectric Power Station.”

EFCC also alleged that on May 22, 2003, Agunloye conspired with Leno Adesanya of SPTCL now at large to do an illegal act to wit; forgery of a letter titled, “Construction of 3,960 megawatts Mambila Hydroelectric Power Station on a build, operate and transfer basis.”

The commission among others alleged that the former minister on different dates in 2019 received various sums of money, totalling N5.212 million from SPTCL and Leno Adesanya, through Jide Abiodun Sotirin through Agunloye’s Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account, for conveying the Federal Government’s approval for the construction of the Mambila Hydroelectric Power Station.

The former minister has consistently maintained his innocence of the charge preferred against him by the anti-graft agency.

After his not-guilty plea, Hussain informed the court that the PW3, Umar Hussein Babangida, was absent in court.

He, therefore, pleaded with the court to vacate the earlier dates of Sept. 22 and 25 fixed for hearing the case, adding that the former dates had been communicated to the defence team.

Based on parties’ agreement, Justice Onwuegbuzie consequently adjourned the matter until Oct. 9 for cross examination of the PW3.
