  • Anthrax: FG alerts of outbreaks in Ghana, Togo, others

The Federal Government has alerted the public on the outbreak of Anthrax disease in some neighbouring countries within the West African sub-region.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Ernest Umakhihe, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, the affected countries are Northern Ghana which borders Burkina Faso and Togo.

Umakhihe said that the disease, which had claimed some lives, is bacterial and affects both animals and man.

He said that Anthrax spores are naturally found in the soil and commonly affect domestic and wild animals.

Umakhihe said that people could get infected with Anthrax spores if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.

He said that the disease is not contagious but one cannot get it by coming in close contact with an infected person.

”Signs of anthrax are, flu-like symptoms, such as cough, fever, and muscle aches,“ he said.

He said further that if not diagnosed and treated early, it could lead to pneumonia, severe lung problems, difficulty in breathing, shock, and ultimately, death.

He added, however, that anthrax responds to treatment with antibiotics and supportive therapy.

”It is primarily a disease of animals but because of man’s closeness to animals, non-vaccinated animals with anthrax can easily be transmitted to man through the inhalation of anthrax spores.

”It could also be through consumption of contaminated or infected animal products, such as hides and skin (known in Nigeria as ‘Pomo’), meat or milk,” he said.

He said annual vaccinations with anthrax spores are available at the National Veterinary Research Institute in Vom, Plateau Staten, and that it is the cheapest and easiest means of prevention and control of the disease in animals, adding that infected animals cannot be vaccinated, but animals at risk can be vaccinated.

”There is a  need to intensify animal vaccinations along border States of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States, because of their proximity to Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana,” he said.

Umakhihe urged other states in Nigeria to join in the exercise to prevent the spread of the disease.

He advised that infected dead animals should be buried deep into the soil, with equipment used in the burial after applying chemicals that would kill the anthrax spores.

“The public is strongly advised to desist from the consumption of hides (pomo), smoked meat, and bush meat as they pose a serious risk until the situation is brought under control,” he said.

Umakhihe urged the public to remain calm and vigilant as the Federal Government has resuscitated a Standing Committee on the control of Anthrax.

He said that relevant institutions and collaborators have been contacted with the aim of controlling the outbreak.

  • Nigeria Air: Hon Nnaji asked for 5% bribe, Sirika alleges

*Says N3bn Nigeria Air fund not completely spent

*You’re a drowning man, Nnaji replies Sirika

    NIGERIA AIR
The Nigeria Air was hurriedly commissioned by Hadi Sirika on May 26

Embattled former Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Senator Hadi Sirika, has said that the House Committee Chairman on Aviation, Hon. Pharmacist Nnolim Nnaji asked for five percent equity shares of Nigeria Air for himself and his people.

Sirika, who has been on fire following the hurried launch on May 26, said that the N3 billion released by the Federal Government towards establishing Nigeria Air has not been completely spent.

Sirika made this known in Abuja while speaking to newsmen on the issue of the national airline.

According to him, from 2016 to 2023, the budget for Nigeria Air is N5 billion, but only N3 billion was released, and up till today, the money has not been completely spent.

He said the government of Nigeria did not pay a dime for the unveiling of Nigeria Air on May 26.

“It is ridiculous to think that we’ll hire and paint an aircraft for N138 billion, which could get us five new Boeing 777 Max.

“We are responsible people and the general public should approach the Ministry of Information and apply for the right of information to see for themselves.

“The House Committee Chairman on Aviation asked for 5 percent of Nigeria Air for himself and his people. I asked him to approach the owners of the airline,” he said.

According to him, former President Olusegun Obasanjo handed Nigeria Airways to his friend company, Arik Air, which is indebted to the tune of over N300bn, of which Nigeria taxpayers’ money is N250bn via AMCON.

“So, do we hand it over to Arik?” he asked, rhetorically.

Meanwhile, House of Representatives member, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji has reacted to the allegation by former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika regarding Nigeria Air.

At a public hearing, Nnaji described the controversial project as a fraud and condemned the use of an Ethiopian Airlines’ registered aircraft during the launch in May.

In response, Nnaji called Sirika a drowning man and advised him to tell citizens “the truth about the contraption he sold to us as Nigeria Air”.

Nnaji recalled that his committee was inundated with petitions from stakeholders after the announcement of Ethiopian Airlines as the core investor.

The committee, he noted, requested for the evidence of the bid process and the business case prepared by the Nigerian Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

Nnaji said Sirika told them the document was being worked out by the ICRC and they would make it available but failed to do so before Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) sued the Ministry and got an order stopping the project.

“On May 20th 2023, l received reports of threats of mass resignations by key personnel of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA),” he said.

The threat, according to him, followed pressures from the Ministry to give waivers to Nigeria Air to enable it secure Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) so that it could take off before President Muhammadu Buhari leaves office.

Nnaji said he issued a statement warning the former Minister against subverting the authority of NCAA because of its severe consequences on the air transport sector.

“It is also common knowledge that the Nigerian institutional investors he mentioned as participants have all denied him.

“It is not strange that Sirika came up with these spurious allegations against my person because l remained consistent in demanding that he followed due process. He should not deviate from the subject-matter”, Nnaji added.

The Service had recruited 2,500 officers and men to enhance its capacity and foster work delivery.

“The increase in lives saved from 2019 till date could be attributed to the procurement of additional firefighting trucks and recruitment of personnel,” it said.

  • World Environment Day: Foundation, partners rid Elegushi Beach of plastic waste

As part of activities to mark World Environment Day, an NGO, Sterling One Foundation, and partners have carried out a clean-up exercise at Elegushi Beach to rid it of plastic waste.

The event, which took place on Saturday in Lagos, was in commemoration of World Environmental Day (WED).

Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the foundation, Mrs. Olapeju Ibekwe, said that plastics had become a threat to the environment, health, and sustainability of the earth.

Ibekwe said that the theme of the 2023 WED – “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”, called for collaborative action from governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to put an end to plastic pollution.

She said that the foundation was delighted in joining its partners who love and care for the environment to ensure that Elegushi Beach was free of plastics.

“It is something that we have always prioritized at the Sterling One Foundation; we prioritise climate action, and one of the ways we ensure that we execute our programs is to adopt beaches for clean up in a sustainable way.

“Today we are commemorating WED with our partners. We are picking plastics from the oceanfront to ensure that they do not get into our oceans and be part of the plastic that reports say will be more than fish in the oceans by 2050.

“We are also here to sensitise the community on the need for us to be intentional about ensuring that plastic is not just looked at as waste, but also a resource that can go back into our economy and help in job creation and poverty reduction,” Ibekwe said.

She expressed gratitude to Sterling Bank and other partners who made the event worthwhile.

Also speaking, Dr Mobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary, Environmental Services, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, said that plastic pollution was a major challenge to the world.

Represented by Mr. Bolajii Osinowo, the Chief Scientist Officer in the Ministry, Gaji said that a minimum of 400 million tonnes of plastic waste were generated annually.

Gaji said that if the wastes were left unused, they find their way into drainages, and the wetlands causing challenges to the environment.

“It is advisable that we adopt the reduce, reuse, and recycle policy of the Lagos State Government on plastic waste.

“This will help to reduce the volume of plastic waste that we generate,” Gaji said.

The Permanent Secretary also expressed concern about the use of plastic chopping boards in the kitchen.

He said that over time, particles of plastic (micro/nano plastics) find their way to the food we eat, of which is harmful.

He added that the burning of plastics to light firewood or charcoal for cooking emits Green House Gases (GHG) into the atmosphere, causing climate change.

Also speaking, the Aroba of Ikate Kingdom, Chief Olalekan Bakare, called for a cleaner environment.

He expressed gratitude to partners and volunteers who came to help in cleaning the beach.

According to him, the Ikate Kingdom along the coast is one of the fastest-growing real estate areas in Lagos State with an increasing population.

“It is also very important that whilst we are making sure that the residents and businesses are safe, we also have to make sure that the environment is kept clean.

“It is very important to create awareness on waste disposal, recycling, and the importance of keeping the environment clean,” the royal father said.

  • Ignore fake news about Kyari’s suspension—Presidency

Cold water has been poured on speculations going round that President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) GCEO, Mallam Mele Kyari.

Presidency sources said on Saturday night that the President had not given such directive for the suspension of Kyari as NNPC Boss.

Social media platforms were abuzz on Saturday evening with several posts claiming the President had directed the immediate suspension of Kyari as NNPC GCEO.

The social media posts of the purported suspension of Kyari gained traction as it was coming barely 24 hours after the Presidency announced the suspension of the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

Multiple sources in the Presidency reiterated that there was no such plan to suspend Kyari as the GCEO of the NNPC.

One of the sources said, “We got to know about the purported suspension through social media posts. But I can confirm to you that there is no such directive coming from the President. Nigerians are known to play a lot with trends and someone may just have sat down somewhere to make such posts.

“There is no iota of truth in that post claiming that the President has suspended the NNPC GCEO. There is nothing to be worried about because the Petroleum Industry Act is clear on how the NNPC GCEO or any member of the NNPC Board could be removed.”

  • Man City complete season’s treble with Champions League win

Premier League champions, Manchester City completed their first-ever season treble when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in Istanbul on Saturday night.

After winning the Premier League and FA Cup, City emulated Manchester United’s triple trophy haul in 1999 as they became only the second English club to achieve the feat after Rodri’s crisp 68th-minute strike settled an attritional final.

Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side were never at their best against a brilliantly organised Inter and had to cope with the loss of Kevin De Bruyne to injury in the first half.

But the massed ranks of City fans inside Ataturk Stadium did not care about that as they joyously celebrated the greatest night – and season – in the club’s history.

And for Guardiola, it seals his status as one of the managerial greats as he added a third Champions League to the two he won at Barcelona, the last coming in 2011.

This was never the walkover many predicted and City had to survive a few scares when Federico Dimarco’s header bounced off the bar and Ederson made a stunning late save to deny Romelu Lukaku but ultimately this was all about the victory.
